For many students, school is their refuge; it’s the safest place in their life.

The fear was palpable and constant in his house. His mother knew how fragile the peace could be, but she felt powerless to change the situation. She had no means of support for herself and her children without her husband’s income. So she stayed, trying to protect them as best she could.

There are some amazing kids sitting in our classrooms. Although they seem pleasant at school, we would be shocked by the kind of violence and stress they face every day at home. It’s a wonder some of them function as well as they do. For these students, school is their refuge; it’s the safest place in their life. It’s where they have friends who accept them and where they feel safe from being hurt.

For others, the sad reality is, the problems at home are compounded by additional problems at school. A child unsupported, neglected and abused at home will often feel insecure, lonely and inadequate with peers. The absence of love and security within the family unit often leaves a child ill equipped to make and maintain healthy relationships outside the family. They may lack confidence and find it difficult to trust others. Bracing against pain has become a way of life and getting too close to people has proven dangerous.

Fear and stress at home, and fear and stress at school: for some, it’s a double dose of anxiety. And then of course there is that English report, the Earth Science exam and that pesky Geometry homework. Some kids just don’t have the luxury to worry about school. They have bigger concerns and more immediate traumas to survive.
